FRANCE: 1998-99 CLOTH/SPONGE/SCOURER SALES

In the year ending February 1999, the French sponge/dishcloth/scourer market was worth FFr 943.8mn, a 3.4% increase in value according to ACNeilson. At FFr 671.4mn, scourer sale values were up 4%. At FFr 272.4mn, sales of cloths/sponges were up 1.9%. Combined products accounted for 77.4% of the market by value. All the latest launches in the sector are based on increased efficiency, resistance, hygiene and technology, and also the aesthetic aspect of the product. The cloth sector has been stimulated by the arrival of micro-fibre (from Thion, Spontex, 3M and Vileda). Spontex's new fibres are called 'aqua-fibres'. The sector is livened up with regular promotions, free offers remaining the most popular promotional tactic. For example La Menagere (Thion) is offering a free microfibre dishcloth with 'Serpilliere 2000' floorcloth purchases.

FRANCE: SALES OF BLANK CDS A SUCCESS

Article Abstract:

Though the French consumers buy more blank CD-Rs (recordable) owing to their cheapest price (FFr 9-35) compared to FFr 75-80 for CD-RWs (rewritable), the CD-RW recorders are more successful than the CD-Rs machines. Blank CDs are expected to represent a 60mn-unit market in 1999, up from 35mn in 1998 and 8mn the year before.
