FRANCE: BULL SIGNS WORLD CONTRACT WITH RED HAT

Article Abstract:

Bull expects to sell a third of its Express 5800 servers equipped with Linux. Under a worldwide partnership agreement it has signed with Red Hat, Bull will be able to deliver its servers with Linux installed, targeting free software professional services. The remaining two-thirds of servers will continue to be delivered with Windows NT installed. Bull expects to sell 70,000 Express 5800 servers in 2000, double the previous figure.

FRANCE: FRANCE TELECOM SHIFTS OPERATING SYSTEM

Article Abstract:

France Telecom has selected development tools from Versant, and IBM's and BEA's Java application servers as part of a strategy to improve the quality of its information system and propose new Internet services more rapidly. The French telephone operator will progressively replace its OS2 operating system (active in 60,000 workstations at France Telecom) with a Java, object oriented system open to customers, partners and suppliers and able to support such new standards as XML for instance. France Telecom turns over FFr 5bn in the Internet sector with two million subscribers to Wanadoo and 3mn daily hits recorded by Voila.

FRANCE: FRANCE TELECOM REVAMPS HELP DESK SYSTEM

Article Abstract:

France Telecom has invested FFr 65mn to revamp and simplify its internal help desk system, including 4,500 licences for Remedy's ARS software (Action request system), a US specialist in software packages for huge call centres. France Telecom's help desk handles 90,000 problems per month, coming from 150,000 users. The French telecom operator houses 82,000 servers, 100 workstations and more than 100 software packages.
