Austria: Online brokers to merge

Article Abstract:

Austria's two largest online brokers are to merge. Direktanlage.at, a subsidiary of HypoVereinsbank, is to take over Vbankdirekt.at, a subsidiary of Vorarlberger Volksbank . The former has 17,500 clients and a market share of more than 50%, while Vbankdirekt.at has about 8,500 clients. Both banks report that since the terrorist attacks in the US, the number of clients' transactions has increased considerably. However, Vbankdirekt.at reports that it has been hit by the turbulence in the stock markets and expects an operating loss in 2001. Of the bank's 89 staff in Bregenz, 63 will become redundant at the end of 2001, when Vbankdirekt.at will stop operating.
