AUSTRIA: PLANS FOR AVIATION HOLDING

Article Abstract:

Austria's state industry holding OIAG is contemplating closer ties between Austrian Airlines, Lauda Air and Tyrolean Airways. The plan is to set up a holding company that would own the entire stock of the three airlines. Mr Niki Lauda and Germany's Lufthansa, owners of just under 30% and 20% in Lauda Air, respectively, would become shareholders of the holding company. By bringing the three together, OIAG is hoping to improve coordination between the carriers. Operations such as aircraft purchasing, service and route coordination would be concentrated within the holding company. If the plans are carried out, Lufthansa will increase its influence on the Austrian aviation market. The German airline's share in the holding would reflect not just its Lauda stake but also its 10% share in Austrian Airlines previously held by Swissair.
