FRANCE: RAW MILK INDUSTRY IS MOBILISING

Article Abstract:

Although a study by the French Food Health and Safety Agency (AFSSA) has shown that pasteurised cheese presents the same risk of listeria as cheese made with raw milk, the dairy industry with the support of the French Secretary of State for Health and the Ministry of Employment is getting ready to launch a poster information campaign in hospitals, maternity clinics, and at gynaecologists suggesting that pregnant women should eat products made with pasteurised milk rather than with raw milk. The raw milk industry is reacting. The intercompany partnership for soft wash rind cheese says that it is ready to go to greater lengths to prevent raw milk from being killed off by economic imperatives.

FRANCE: INAO GRANTS AOC TO MORBIER

Article Abstract:

The Institut National des Appellations d'Origine (INAO) has granted AOC certification to Morbier. Now Morbier must be made entirely with raw milk from two breeds of cattle: red and white cattle from the east of France, and Montbeliarde cattle. These must be fed on grass in the summer and hay in the winter. The cheese must be ripened for a minimum of 45 days. The area for the Morbier AOC includes the Doubs and Jura departements, and several communes in the Ain and Saone-et-Loire departements. Morbier producers located outside of this area have five years to stop production of this AOC cheese.
