FRANCE: REVIEW OF FRENCH WOOD EXPORTS

Article Abstract:

According to the French national wood federation, FNB, France's resources are growing, with French forests covering 9.3mn hectares in 1830, and 15mn at present. By 2030, it is expected to reach 16mn hectares. It is said that Canada can no longer satisfy demand to the USA in conifer trees, and France holds a lot of promise in Douglas pine trees, with the help of Canadian wholesalers. Following the storms of late 1999, this may also be the case with China, which is looking for beechwood supplies, for interior construction. As for exports, France's exports increased by 38% in value, over the first five months of 2000, with FFr 1.544bn, compared to FFr 1.12bn in that of 1999. In that same period (Jan-May 2000), exports to China went from FFr 54mn in 1999, to FFr 251mn this year, according to the Minsitry for Agriculture.

FRANCE: STRONG PERFORMANCE FOR SHIP FITTERS IN 2000

Article Abstract:

French ship fitters performed well in 2000, benefiting from worldwide economic growth and higher standards set for ships. Internationally, bulk transport expanded significantly in 2000. In the oil sector, there was a lack of capacity because old ships were taken out of service and have not yet been replaced by new ships. There was a similar situation in the gas sector. For regular lines, there was an improvement in transpacific traffic, but transatlantic traffic lagged behind. The French fleet has diminished, and in 2000 was in 28th place in the world ranking, from fifth place at the beginning of the 1960s. There are now only 9,500 sailors, of whom 2,840 are officers.
