FRANCE: THE EFFECTS OF THE GALLAND LAW

Article Abstract:

Two and a half years after its introduction, the overall affects of the Galland law are believed to be positive. In effect, thanks to this law, there are fewer conflicts between distributors and suppliers, and the practice of selling products at a loss has almost been eradicated (although there are a few exceptions). On the other hand, the main objective of this law, that is the clarification of the relationship between distributors and suppliers, has not yet been attained. The Galland law has also had some unexpected results: for example it has allowed large retailers to appropriate logistics activities and to develop their own-label brand products. With reference to logistics; if the Galland law has allowed a reduction in conflicts between distributors and suppliers, it has also led to an increase in logistics costs. This increase is linked to a reduction in transport costs and an increase of stock levels.

FRANCE: IMPROVING RETAILER, PRODUCER RELATIONS

Article Abstract:

The French government is working on the improvement of retailer and food producers. It intends to create working groups which have representatives from both sectors. The French Parliament is going to set up a working group under the Senate's commission for economic affairs for food producers which include elected officials.
