Facism resurgent?
Article Abstract:
The Freedom Party has performed well in Austrian elections of Oct 1999, achieving 27% of the vote compared with the Social Democrats with 33%, and coming second, ahead of the People's Party. The chancellor, Viktor Klima, from the Social Democrats, argues that he will not set up a coalition with the Freedom Party, though there is speculation that his opinion could change. Some of Haider's policies are xenophobic and unacceptable, while others are more respectable, such as his opposition to the sharing out of public sector posts by the two main parties.

Article Abstract:
Austria has low inflation and low unemployment and this might appear enough for a coalition government involving the People's Party and Social Democrats in power after elections in Oct 1999. The Freedom Party, a far right organization led by Jorg Haider, has become increasingly popular, and it could gain more votes than the People's Party. The Freedom Party stresses law and order and is xenophobic, and also opposes the allocation of jobs by the two main parties. Haider is also a skilled tactician.

Heil Haider?
Article Abstract:
The Freedom Party has performed well in provincial elections in Austria in Mar 1999. The party obtained 42% of the vote in Carinthia. Jorg Haider, leader of the party, aims to become chancellor of Austria. Haider expresses concern about immigration which many in Carinthia share. The party may have become strong enough to perform well elsewhere, and it could achieve a share of the vote above that of the People's Party. Haider should not be dismissed as a political force.
