Falling down

Article Abstract:

Small independent energy companies need to find ways of exploiting oil fields which are not utilized by the larger firms. They also need to find suitable partners to compete in the upstream market. Some companies have already agreed to merge, such as acquisition of Hardy oil and gas by British Borneo Petroleum, in Sept 1998. Although following the deal their share value has fallen. Some of the larger oil companies are also merging in order to offset the fall in price of oil. Industry observers suggest the agreement between BP Amoco and Mobil European oil and fuels was a very good deal.

The quest for the Holy Grail

Article Abstract:

The owners of Germany's 'Mittelstand' medium-sized private companies are starting to become aware of the possible advantages of private equity. However, they are still cautious about private equity, and are only willing to work with private equity providers which are not planning an exit as soon as they purchase a stake. Private equity firms will only be able to attract 'Mittelstand' companies if they are able to overcome the German tradition of relying on bank debt as a route for expansion.

Journey to the centre of the universe

Article Abstract:

The city of Birmingham, England, is likely to be increasingly seen as an investment opportunity as it takes on a very international flavour in 1998. There have already been significant changes in the city, and it has particularly benefited from the presence of leading automotive concerns. At present, venture capitalists, law firms and accounting firms are being rather cautious about prospects for fee income in 1998, but they are likely to benefit from high acquisition prices.
