Blowing it

Article Abstract:

Alphorn, the popular Swiss musical instrument, was not indigenous to Switzerland despite its strong association with Swiss folk customs. The Nomads originating from the pastoral tribes of Europe and Asia brought the instrument to Switzerland. It was mainly used for tending herds, as well as for religious meditations. The instrument almost became obsolete during the first half of the 20th century. However, in the 1950s, the Swiss Yodeling Assn promoted the use of this instrument until it became so popular it was featured in popular music stations.

Cheers for the cherries!

Article Abstract:

Kirsch is a cherry fruit brandy made in Switzerland which was originally intended to be a cure for cholera. The production of good kirsch is dependent upon the quality and types of cherries harvested. Kirsch producers, however, are finding it difficult to cope with the high taxes imposed on them as a product containing alcohol in addition to fluctuating prices. The image of kirsch compared to other spirits is rather low because it is marketed as a grocery item.
