Day care within the Swiss system

Article Abstract:

Switzerland's State school system follows a schedule that wreaks havoc on the schedules of mothers, particularly those who have to work. Unlike in other industrialized countries, classes in Swiss schools do not start and end at the same time. There are different schedules for different days and for different school levels, and children never in school stay over lunch. To solve the problems that this creates for mothers, a group of Zurich-based women campaigned for the establishment of the day-school system. The Zurich Dept. of Education eventually permitted the creation of schools that provide lunch and before and after school care.

Swiss neuroscientist Martin E. Schwab is the first recipient of the Christopher Reeve Research Medal. He was given the award, together with $50,000 in prize money, for his pioneering work in neurological research. He and his colleagues at the Brain Research Institute in Zurich have been studying the functions of a special protein inhibitor that prevents uncontrolled neurite growth in the brain. By blocking this inhibitor, damaged nerve fibers in the injured spinal cord can grow back.
