Family firm: Muslim governor accused of 'unparalleled' nepotism

Article Abstract:

Hernando Perez, minority floor leader of the Philippine House of Representatives, charged Gov Lininding Pangandaman of the Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao with practicing nepotism on an unheard-of scale since being elected by a small majority on Mar 25, 1993. According to Perez, Pangandaman has appointed 13 relatives to important regional posts. However, the accusation may be intended to stop Pangandaman from devoting the $43 million public works budget to projects in regions he governs and to force him to appoint members of Perez's Laban ng Democratikong Pilipino party.

A family affair

Article Abstract:

Makindo remains Indonesia's top securities firm because of firm family control, insightful planning, and managing director Gunawan Jusuf's ability to discover stock where others cannot. The company remains controversial and has many enemies, but some observers say jealousy motivates most of the criticism. While Makindo's share of the market plummeted from 19% in 1992-93 to 7.2% in 1994, Gunawan claims the firm's absolute volume continues to rise. It employs matriarch Rachmiwaty, six children, and several spouses.

Who's in charge? Anarchy threatens talks with Muslim rebels

Article Abstract:

Impending negotiations between the Philippine government and the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) may produce no results due to the MNLF's increasing lack of control over Muslim rebels in the Mindanao provinces. A government panel and MNLF leader Nur Misuari met on Apr 14-16, 1993 and declared that peace talks would start before the end of June. However, several incidents such as the kidnapping of a priest point to worsening anarchy that may doom the talks before they begin.
