Pipelines to profit: Malaysia plans privatised sewerage network

Article Abstract:

Malaysia has awarded a contract to the Indah Water Konsortium to build and operate a new nation-wide sewer system. The consortium is led by David Chew of North West Water and Tan Sri Vincent Tan of Berjaya, a group with experience in real estate, gambling and tourism, but not with infrastructure. Critics accuse Malaysia's prime minister, Mahathir Mohamad, who has close ties with Tan, of nepotism. Tan defends the partnership between government and business, and says it will be good for the country's economy. The new, decentralized system is expected to be relatively cheap and efficient.

Hard money

Article Abstract:

Several restrictions remain despite Taiwan's new openness to foreign investors. Since 1991, the government has allowed a limited number of investorsto do business in the country. Brokers are not part of this favored group and only managed to get in by using the names of other companies. This situation iswell known to authorities and even allows them to exercise more control over the foreign business community. Furthermore, the Central Bank continues to havetight restrictions for foreign currency and this further mars the country's liberalization policy.

Faith, hope and charity

Article Abstract:

Korea Mobile Telecommunications Inc's solid profits and low price-earnings ratio initially made it attractive to foreign investors. However, company donations to support the local production of mobile telephones are forcing investors to turn away from the company. The company's share prices have fallen sharply as local investors expressed little interest in investing in companies that have low price-earnings ratios.
