National gridlock

Article Abstract:

A nationwide blackout that struck Malaysia on Sep 29, 1992 has exposed flaws in the power-generation policies and operations of Tenaga Nasional Berhad, the country's semi-privatized national power utility, and has damaged Malaysia's attractiveness to foreign manufacturers. Businesses are still recovering from the resulting loss in production and the public is now scrutinizing the utility more closely. The incident was preceded by another blackout in Singapore only hours before and Malaysia reports importing power to its neighbor before it occurred.

True believers: Malaysian stock investors seek celestial guidance

Article Abstract:

Malaysian stock investors, particularly those new to the risks of choosing stocks, are increasingly turning to astrologers, village mendicants, gurus and other soothsayers for advice. About 20,000 new investors have joined Kuala Lumpur's bullish stock market since Mar 1993. Many of these are ethnic Chinese who rely on feng shui, a traditional method of locating positive and negative energy, to forecast the market's performance. Conventional stock analysts also predict that the market will continue to rise.
