Confusing signals: Malaysian telecoms policy remains ill-defined

Article Abstract:

Malaysia has failed to make its telecommunications policy more explicit. Privatization as implemented by the Malaysian government has produced two telephone services, Uniphone and the former monopoly Telekom Malaysia. These services issue phonecards that cannot be used in each other's call boxes. The government has declined to spell out how it intends to set up another competitor for Telekom Malaysia. Two companies, Technology Resources Industries and Binariang, are both clamoring to be accorded this position.

Owning up: Malaysia's Bank Negara suffers currency losses

Article Abstract:

Bank Negara, the central bank of Malaysia, announced in a Mar 30, 1993 report that it had lost $1 billion in its foreign-exchange operations as of Dec 31, 1992. The bank attributed the losses to adjustments in the foreign-exchange market caused by several factors including the rise in value of Malaysia's own monetary unit, the ringgit. Bank Negara's losses may have political consequences due to its connections with the Finance Ministry.
