All aboard: new Singapore-Bangkok train goes for the glitz

Article Abstract:

The new Eastern and Oriental (E&O) Express made its maiden trek from Singapore to Bangkok on Sep 19, 1993. The E&O was developed by the British, Malaysian and Thai tourist consortium and financed by the Singapore, Malaysian and Thai governments. The 41-hour round trip is expected to appeal to the regions wealthy tourists and costs between $1,130 and $2,950 per person. Malaysia's YTL Corp. is the largest investor. The region's tourist industry and the political aspects of the new train are discussed.

The Indian share: Malaysia deepens probe of telecom privatisation

Article Abstract:

Malaysia's Energy, Telecommunications and Posts Minister Datuk Seri Samy Vellu is being investigated for alleged corruption. Samy Vellu is the president of the Malaysian Indian Congress and is suspected of having embezzled nine million shares in Telekom Malaysia and distributed them to three ethnic Indian firms, two of which are owned by his relatives. The minister has been the overseer of the privatization of government utilities.
