US public sector mortgage banking is seen as presenting unfair competition by the private sector. Federal mortgage agencies should be privatized and allowed to borrow only at rates of interest reflecting risk levels involved.

The US housing market is undergoing a boom, and the Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corp and Federal National Mortgage Association are key lenders in this market. There is concern that these bodies may have increased credit to excessive levels. Reform is needed, but there are political obstacles.
