A second chance

Article Abstract:

Andre Lee is setting up an Asian investment banking service. He contributed to the collapse of Peregrine by lending Peregrine equity to an Indonesiam firm, Steady Safe. He decided that lack of liquidity and transparency had led to many problems evident in the Asian financial crisis, and that the internet could help tackle these problems. He has set up 01 Inc with its DealComposer website allowing companies to raise capital. This could bring major savings by allowing direct contacts between borrowers and lenders. The company could act as a model for others in South Korea.

Online and in a mess

Article Abstract:

The British Broadcasting Corp (BBC) has become involved in the Internet through BBC Worldwide, the commercial arm of the BBC. Worldwide and ICL set up a JV to develop a Web site, with the content mainly coming from the BBC. There is also a public service site, BBC Online, which has better access to content than beeb.com, the commercial site. BBC Online is especially popular among users from abroad, and many UK households cannot use it, though it is paid for from public funds. There would be problems if BBC Online was allowed to gain an income from advertising, since it would squeeze out competition due to the strength of the BBC brand.
