Farmed out

Article Abstract:

Mexican land reform has left farms on rural collectives that are too small to allow for investments in technology, and they cannot easily compete with US farmers who get more subsidies, have bigger farmers, and can buy more eqipment. Mexican farmers also face higher fuel and fertilizer prices, and less developed infrastructure. The government wants to help farmers move to more profitable crops, but this is not easy for all the farmers. There are also some 1.5 million smallholders with similar problems.

Asia doesn't want

Article Abstract:

US farmers have been hit by lower prices as demand from Asia has dropped, and storage capacity is limited. Farmers have seen a reduction in their ratio of debts to assets, but this could change if the price of land drops. Farmers seek better access to markets abroad, tax relief and less regualtion, and criticise Congress for not delivering these promises. They also seek an exemption for agricultural products from economic sanctions, such as those imposed on Cuba.

Of wheat and welfare

Article Abstract:
