The fast food trade in the U.K. has rapidly expanded from its roots in hamburger bars to encompass a large range of bars and restaurants, including pizza outlets, hot potatoe chains and ethnic catering. The market was worth some 5.35 billion pounds sterling in 1995 and was dominated by the hamburger sector, worth 1.24 billion pounds sterling. Other leading sectors are chicken, pizza and hot potatoes. The leading player in the overall market is McDonald's, with a value share of 34%, followed by Burger King with 14%. It is expected that the market will reach some 6 billion pounds sterling by 2000.
