Fast-track factory for Motorola

Article Abstract:

Motorola's new cellular telephone factory at Easter Inch, Scotland is designed to embody the company's philosophy of team work and integration of functions. The two storey, 18,000 square meter building is set in landscaped grounds close to transport and with room for further expansion. Constructed of concrete and steel with glazed atria, the exterior is unexciting. However, internally the space is used to emphasise the corporate culture. There is no barrier between offices and the production area. The design will be a reference point for similar facilities. The building was completed by fast-track methods in a year.

Factory of the future

Article Abstract:

Architect, The Ryder Nicklin Partnership has designed a new factory for optronic equipment manufacturer, Barr and Stroud. The factory is built of cheap materials and houses all the firm's functions within one shell. Despite the low cost of materials, the building emphasises Barr and Stroud's commitment to its single status, high technology culture. It allows flexibility for the future needs of the firm and houses clean rooms, testing facilities and seismic isolated areas as well as offices, catering facilities and the production area.
