Fate of nominees for top EU body remains in doubt

Article Abstract:

The European Parliament is threatening to reject President Jose Manuel Barroso's nominations to the European Commission. The Parliament is specifically objecting to the nominations of Rocco Buttiglione as Justice Commissioner and Neelie Kroes as antitrust chief. The concern with Buttiglione has to do with his views on such social issues as women's rights and homosexuality. With Kroes, Parliament is concerned about potential conflicts of interest between her business ties and her role as a regulator. The Parliament must approve all or none of the nominees.
