Mrs Smith confuses Washington

Article Abstract:

Seattle congresswoman, Linda Smith, is running for Senate. She opposes trade agreements and does not accept funds from corporate action committees. She also opposes abortion rights and gun control. She was a Democrat, before becoming a Republican in 1983, and could split from the Republicans, many of whose policies she opposes. The Republicans wanted another candidate, but Linda Smith ran against the hierarchy of the party, and campaign cash has been withheld from her. Other election campaigns in Washington are affected by anti-party politics.

Mountains v manicured lawns

Article Abstract:

Boulder, Colorado, has been Democratic for 25 years, but could elect a Republican in Nov 1998 elections for the House of Representatives. Mark Udall is the Democrat's candidate, while Bob Greenlee is standing for the Republicans. Udall is well known and has been executive director of Colorado's Outward Bound school. He faces a trend of votes moving away from the Democrats. Greenlee argues that Udall believes in government spending as a way of tackling problems, and sees himslef as conservative on fiscal issues and moderate on social issues.
