End game: Ghafar leaves cabinet but will fight on in party polls

Article Abstract:

Malaysia's Deputy Prime Minister Ghafar Baba turned in a letter of resignation to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Mahathir Mohamad on Oct 15, 1993. Whether Mahathir will confirm Ghafar's departure is uncertain. However, Ghafar held on to his position as deputy president of the United Malays National Organisation (Umno), which dominates the National Front coalition government. Ghafar's decision to retain his Umno post is surprising because of the likelihood that Finance Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will defeat him in Umno elections scheduled for November.
