Fifa haunted by ghosts of Chile stadium killings

Article Abstract:

A decision by the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) in Nov 1973 to expel the Soviet Union from the 1974 World Cup for refusing to play Chile because of the country's brutal treatment of dissidents and communists comes to mind in the face of the attempted extradition of Chile's Gen. Augusto Pinochet. Pinochet's government had turned the Estadio Nacional in Santiago into a detention center that held thousands of communists and other dissenters, many of whom were executed by firing squads.
