Fifty years of love and hate in city of the future

Article Abstract:

The city of Chandigarh, India, was intended to symbolize modernity. Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru commissioned architects to design this city in 1949 to represent India's progression into the modern world. Critics of the city, which was built from concrete and designed with overtones of the American city grid pattern, maintain that it shows no respect for the local culture. However, architect Le Corbusier developed his ideas for the use of water in the city from Indian culture, and architects Maxwell Fry and Jane Drew used concrete due to its suitability for hot climates.

Ando's garden - where concrete and nature unite

Article Abstract:

Japanese architect Tadao Ando frequently introduces nature into his buildings, using natural elements to penetrate and animate basic geometrical structures. He manages to combine inorganic reinforced-concrete walls with natural elements, creating purposeful, functional structures which contrast sharply with their immediate environment. This is demonstrated in his Garden of Fine Arts in Kyoto, Japan, which contains many examples of simulated western and Japanese art.

Concrete lessons from 'Mittel Europa'

Article Abstract:

Modernism in Eastern Europe has led to notable regional variations producing original and innovative designs. Architecture of the 1930s is evident in former communist countries and an interest in some particular examples is expressed. One such example is a health spa, designed by Prague architect Rudolf Stockar. An early representation of modernism, the spa is situated in Sliac, Slovakia.
