Finance Ministry investigation marks a rift at the top

Article Abstract:

Tokyo District Public Prosecutor Office investigator Katsuhiko Kumazaki's investigations, which have exposed corruption in the Ministry of Finance and banking industries, are expected to have a negative effect on the Japanese economy in the coming months. The revelation of the corruption within the ministry is likely to undermine Prime Minister Hashimoto's plan to spend public funds to help ease the $600 billion banking problem. Mr. Kumazaki's hard stance on crime, which has resulted in the arrest of two bank inspectors and the stepping down of the Minister of Finance, has earned him the moniker, "The Bear."

Ruling LDP and Liberal Party plan to form a coalition; but Ozawa's return to the political arena rases questions about the future of Japanese politics

Article Abstract:

Ichiro Ozawa is again in the middle of the political arena with the planned coalition of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and the Liberal Party. The move is part of Prime Minister Keizo Obuchi's plan to shore up the LDP's legislative base even if it will not give his party an upper-house majority. The role that Ozawa would play in Japan's political scene would depend on how the LDP's Byzantine factionalism would play out.
