Fincantieri receives order for major new Italian ship

Article Abstract:

Fincantieri - Cantieri Navali Italiani SpA on Nov 22, 2000 was awarded a $781-million contract by the Italian Navy for the 22,000t Nuova Unita Maggiore amphibious assault/aircraft carrier. Construction will begin on the company's Riva Trigoso and Muggiano shipyards in Jun 2001, and the ship will be delivered in 2007. Expected to be finalized in early 2001, the contract is still subject to approval of the Italian government's controlling agency before becoming effective.

Spanish shipbuilding consolidation to increase competitiveness

Article Abstract:

The naval shipbuilding industry in Spain announces that it will increase its global competitiveness following Empressa Nacional Bazan's merger with Astilleros Espanoles SA, a commercial shipbuilding conglomerate. According to company officials, the new shipbuilding group, called Izar, will be the ninth biggest in the world with 11,000 employees. The 100%-state-owned Izar will be permitted to invest more $690 million in taxpayers money, said a company executive.

Paksitani Agosta takes new AIP system onboard

Article Abstract:

Direction des Constructions Navales (DCN) of France has started building an Agosta 90B submarine with a Mesma air-independent propulsion (AIP) plant for Pakistan. Aside from DCN, other members of the Mesma industrial team are DCN International, Air Liquide, Thermodyn, Bertin Technologies, Technicatome and Empresa Nacional Bazan of Spain. The Pakistani Agosa will be the first submarine to be equipped with a Mesma AIP system.
