Finland/Sweden: Forest fires

Article Abstract:

Finnish politicians are concerned about another Swedish takeover of a home-grown company, after it was announced Finnish forest company Enso is to be bought by Swedish-based Stora in 1998. Enso is expected to produce sales of $11.1 billion in 1998, with offices in 17 different countries. The increase in foreign ownership could be legally restricted by the opposition party, which plans to limit foreign takeover bids if it is returned to government in elections planned for 1999. StoraEnso will become the largest forest products producer with an estimated annual output of 13.1 tonnes.

Paper company in turnaround

Article Abstract:

After the proposed deal with Asia Pulp and Paper failed to be completed it was decided to offer the different business operations within Binda as separate deals. Binda was the second largest paper production company in Italy but in only one area, decorative paper, was it very competitive. Credit Agricole Indosuez and Lehman Brothers were given the job of selling off the various operations which they did successfully, keeping Binda's 1,500 workers employed. The sale of the company took more than 2 years to compete. The sale of the company made more money than was anticipated.

As sexy as Uma Thurman?

Article Abstract:

The paper and packaging industry is expected to become the target of financial markets due to the lack of consolidation within the sector. The trend has been highlighted by CVC Capital Partners and Cinven purchase of Dutch-based KNP BT's packaging division for 1 billion pounds sterling in May 1998. Some industry experts believe the sector may be targeted by financial buyers as potential fast earners which can be sold on again in a few years.
