Firms wrestle with layoffs

Article Abstract:

Asian corporations are continually struggling to avoid layoffs and pay cuts, which become inevitable due to the difficulties that businesses tackle. The present situation makes it important for management to work on employee motivation, keeping employees informed about the status of the firm. According to human resources managers and consultants, disclosure would allow employees to understand company initiatives and help them accept such strategies as pay cuts, which would be an alternative to layoffs.

Article Abstract:

Hiring temporary managers from the information technology sector has become a trend in Asia. The trend offers several advantages for companies wanting to keep their overhead costs down and skipping benefits such as health insurance coverage. Results of surveys conducted by EL Consulting reveal that the hiring demand for temporary managers for specific projects has risen despite the economic downturn and the lesser demand for other types of staff.

Firms wrestle with layoffs: Motorola averted job cuts in '80s by motivating employees in Asia

Article Abstract:

Asian managers will have to level with their employees if they are to keep them motivated and active in their respective companies' efforts to remain afloat, says human resources consultant Patrick Maule. Motorola was able to avert layoffs in the 1980s by keeping its employees motivated. Asian companies are now facing a similar situation and their solutions range from simple commendations to pay for performance programs.
