Five-star stabling

Article Abstract:

Roger Fitzgerald and Sue Marshall of the Architects Design Partnership (ADP) designed a stable block in Oxford, UK, to provide luxury accommodation for a polo team, managers, grooms and up to 50 horses. The project involved creating an elite environment for people and ponies but also combining the buildings and the countryside. A major part of the eventual cost of the project was spent on the drainage system and sewage works under the stable. Work was carried out over the closed polo season of 1996-97 and took 29 weeks to complete.

Class distinction

Article Abstract:

A new infant school building at St Nicholas C of E Primary school in Shepperton was required to replace an older building. It was designed by architects Wintersgill & Faulkner and the building's sectional form was determined by the aim of achieving comfortable internal temperatures and low consumption of energy. The overhanging curved roof form and large glazed areas admit winter sun, providing natural heating.

A better class of guttering

Article Abstract:

Hampshire County Council's new Park Junior school is very modern in design. The school near Aldershot, has the vague shape of an animal, with the dining room forming a head and classrooms forming the ribs. Each classroom has an external wall and its own outside playground. Gutters are large, and some are covered in tongued and grooved boarding.
