Fizz and flux

Article Abstract:

There are still differences between east and west Berlin, despite German reunification, and there is strong support for the Party of Democratic Socialism (PDS) in the east. The Christian Democrats have won 41% of the vote in state elections, and the PDS gained 18% in Berlin as a whole. The Social Democrats argue that they have performed poorly as a result of the government's austerity program. Changes in Berlin affect wider changes in Germany, such as a reduction in subsidies to the eastern part, and a loss of manufacturing jobs.

The shifting heart of a nation: Germany

Article Abstract:

The transition to Berlin would have been easier if Helmut Kohl had forced to happen sooner after the 1990 reunification of East and West Germany. Berlin has no middle classes and little economic clout compared to Frankfurt, Hamburg, and Munich.

The once and future capital

Article Abstract:

Berlin will be united Germany's new capital in 1999. There has been controversy on this decision because of Berlin's location in eastern Germany, but some in Germany see this as a way to better unify with the east.
