Flexibility and rigidity in customization and build-to-order production

Article Abstract:

The characteristics of activity structures where customized offerings are created with near mass production efficiency are analyzed by outlining modularity and build-to-order production as key features of customizing. The analysis illustrates that a supplier must combine the potential for flexibility offered by the principle of build-to-order production with elements of the rigidity associated with mass production systems in order to customize at reasonable cost.

Complexity of flow shop scheduling problems with transportation constraints

Article Abstract:

A study of the effect of transportation problems on the manufacturing and distribution systems scheduling is presented. The study relates to flexible manufacturing systems wherein the semi-finished jobs are transported from one processing facility to another by transporters like robots, conveyors and automated guided vehicles.
