Flowing gold

Article Abstract:

Imperial Irrigation District, the water authority of Imperial Valley, California, has agreed to sell surplus water to San Diego. The inhabitants of San Diego buy their water from the Met, and are seeking an alternative supply of water. The aqueducts to transport water to San Diego are the property of the Met, which is seeking $230 per acre-foot piped. The state legislature is setting aside 4235 million for lining aqueducts. Critics argue that similar deals could follow, leading to more urban growth. Meanwhile, Coachella Valley argues that it has a prior claim to the surplus water of Imperial Valley.

Hands off

Article Abstract:

There is a debate over the supply and export of water from Canada, with a number of firms seeking licenses to export water. Protest groups argue that water should not be exported. There is concern about the environmental impact of planned diversions of Canadian rivers, such as the Mackenzie and Yukon, and about exports by tanker. The federal government has called on the provinces to sign an agreement banning bulk withdrawals of water at source. A decision is unlikely to be made until May 2000.
