For rent - Italian gems in need of some repair: the government of Italy offers businesses a chance to lease historic properties

Article Abstract:

The Italian government is switching strategies with regard to its historic buildings. Rather than attempting to sell them outright and risk deals getting hindered by legal or conservation issues, the government is offering them for long-term leases. Italy has one of the world's most distinctive property portfolios, including Renaissance villas, medieval castles, and Baroque churches.

U.K. will tap real-estate appetite

The United Kingdom government is planning a megasale of state-owned assets by 2010. The real estate sale is to free up $56.19 billion in substantial capital and is in line with plans of other European governments.
