Article Abstract:

The market for Southeast Asian art has declined since the beginning of 1998, with some works selling for less than they fetched in 1996. However, there is a growing range of purchasers interested in Southeast Asian works, and the market is becoming more stable as Southeast Asian art attracts more western purchasers. Financial difficulties in Southeast Asia are casting a shadow over the longer-term prospects for the region's art. It is unlikely that prices of individual works will rise dramatically in the near future.

Taiwan companies are continuing to push technical boundaries and seek more dominance in high tech markets, despite the regional crisis. A group from the Taiwan government is to visit Singapore in August to offer ideas on promoting business innovation, and Singapore authorities will then visit Taiwan in October to learn from successful companies there. Taiwan firms are able to compete for funding in the capital markets, but in Singapore, potential competitors are often squeezed out.
