Most of the member countries of the European Union will likely be able to join the union's single currency market on Jan 1, 1999, as their budgets are close to meeting the criteria outlined in the Maastricht Treaty. Some question the validity of how countries are meeting the criteria.

Ameeting of European Community finance ministers resulted in changes in exchange rate mechanism rules. Currencies will now be able to fluctuate by 15% instead of 2.25%. The future of the Maastricht treaty and French-German relations are also discussed.
