Foster megastructure set for opening

Article Abstract:

Chek Lap Kok Airport, Hong Kong, opens on Jul 6 1998. It will eventually have two runways and deal with 87 million passengers each year. Architect Sir Norman Foster designed the airport, which stands on a reclaimed island between Hong Kong island and the Kowloon peninsula. The airport terminal is 1.27 kilometers in length. It has 36-meter spans and, despite vertical segregation of arrivals and departures, it is open and airy, and light penetrates between the levels. The building accommodates 75 gates, 210 retail outlets, and a direct connection with the rail terminal.

A pilot airport for the 1990s: the transformation of the outdated Eastleigh Airport into the stylish, modern and flexible Southampton International provides a successful prototype for the low-cost regional airport of the future

Article Abstract:

Southampton's Eastleigh Airport was purchased by the British Airports Authority (BAA), in 1989, and around 25 million pounds sterling has been invested in redevelopment. Planning, development and design was influenced by the physical limitations of further expansion such as runway constraints. The terminal building is at right angles to the runway allowing more larger aircraft to be grouped near to the terminal. The continuous linear roof features rooflights increasing daylight penetration. There is a link to the railway station .

Signs of growth at Stansted

Article Abstract:

Stansted Airport, England, will probably expand to meet the growing demands of passenger traffic. Electronic display systems should be installed to improve the communication of flight departure information to airport visitors. Meeting places could be improved with better lighting. Additional retail outlets should not be installed because they would impair the wayfinding movements of airport passengers.
