France: 12mn terminals connected to Internet, IDC says

Article Abstract:

In France, 363,000 terminals were connected to the Internet via ADSL in the second quarter of 2001, including 222,000 for professional use and 141,000 in households. Compared to 5.4% for standard speed, high speed connections recorded a 20% progression compared to the first quarter this year, according to IDC France. On the basis of around 12mn terminals connected to the Internet in the second quarter (up 80% from the same year-earlier period in 2000), this market is expected to reach beyond 14mn units by the end of 2001, IDC believes. Professional terminals accounted for 59% of it and terminals for domestic use accounted for the remaining 41%.

Article Abstract:

According to a survey carried out by Cefrio, out of 7 million people in Quebec, only 88,000 (4.6%) would have indulged in e-commerce over the Internet. More than 7% of people over the age of 65 would use the Internet to make a purchase, compared to nearly 5% of 18-24 yearolds, even though they only account for 6.5% of internauts in Quebec. There would be nearly two million internauts in total, and 34% would use the Internet on a weekly basis. Amongst male internauts, 40% connect to the Internet regularly, compared to 29% of female internauts.
