France: Overview of sales space

Article Abstract:

According to the figures from Panorama/Points de Vente, on 1 September 2001, France had 9,667 stores, up 1% from 1997, including 5,809 supermarkets, down 6%, 2,695 discount stores, up 23%, and 1,173 hypermarkets, compared with 1,095 in 1997. On the supermarkets segment, there were 29 store closures since 1 September 2000, (30% of these closures were for Carrefour or Intermarche stores) but the average amount of sales space rose 7.5%, in order to include new departments such as chilled ready foods or ready meals. Of the 30 new stores created in one year, 56.6% have less than 1,200 square metres of sales space. There are 164,668 employees in the sector in 2001, up 6.7% since 1997, which brings the average number of employees per store to 28. On the hypermarkets segment, after three years with no new stores created, there were three new sales outlets (Auchan, Cora, and Leclerc) created in 2001. Instead of new store openings, existing stores are being expanded - the sales space has increased an average of 8.4% over five years. There are an average of 201 employees per store. In this sector, recruitment is increasing more rapidly in purchasing groups than in stores. On the discount store segment, there were 117 new store openings over one year, for a total sales space of 55,725 square metres, nevertheless, the average sales space has decreased 2.4% since 1997. Of these 117 new store openings, 88 belonged to the German groups Aldi and Lidl. The average number of employees has increased 57% since 1997.

FRANCE: CARREFOUR INCREASES EMPLOYEE PAY

Article Abstract:

Carrefour is going to reorganise its hypermarkets, because of a 0.9% drop in sales volume, and introduce section heads - one for food and one for non-food products. There will also be commercial projects such as a better distribution between food and non-food products in promotional plans, and Continent products and line entry products will be reintroduced. Carrefour plans to increase its employees' pay by 1% on 1 March 2001, and by 1% as of 1 September 2001. Before signing this agreement the trade unions are consulting their members. The CFDT and the FO trade unions are demanding a 3% to 5% rise, and a 5% rebate on purchase in stores. This rebate would benefit the group, since 30% of the employees make their purchases in another retail chain.
