France, unpredictable after all

Article Abstract:

French Prime Minister Edouard Balladur, once the front runner, has lost support in recent weeks, and Jacques Chirac is now leading in the polls. Socialist candidate Lionel Jospin is in third place. However, many voters are undecided, and Balladur could still win the Apr 23, 1995 election.

An awkward ruling couple

Article Abstract:

It is doubtful that Chirac and Jospin will cooperate in the leadership of France as previous presidents and prime ministers of opposing parties have. Both offices have a large degree of political power. So far, Chirac is upset at Jospin's electoral victory and has receded from the public.
