From platform to plane by ramp and escalator

Article Abstract:

Tye British Rail interchange station at Manchester Airport has been designed by Architect, Austin-Smith: Lord using the metaphore of a lizard. The steel and concrete structure consists of three levels that are separately roofed and slot into eachother. Access from the airport terminal on the highest level to the platforms five meters below ground is by ramp and escalator. The interior of the building is light and spacious with the pin-joint structure clearly expressed. The building illustrates how a good brief can lead to good design that will enhance Manchester's image as an international city.

Restoring the client's confidence

Article Abstract:

Architects are facing growing demand for quality assured service. Large practices can invest the financial and staff resources necessary to devise their own quality assurance (QA) scheme and to become accredited under BS 5740. Smaller firms do not have these resources and may not be able to justify the cost of full accreditation. However, the Royal Institute of Architects in Scotland (RIAS) has set up workshops where several practices can co-operate. This provides a basic foundation for those wishing to develop fully accredited QA services.
