Inside job: Bracken House

Article Abstract:

Michael Hopkins & Partners have redeveloped Bracken House in London, England, for Japanese property developer Obayashi. Bracken House was built in 1956-59 and was the first post-war building to be listed for architectural merit. The redevelopment had to retain the architecturally-distinguished parts of the building but integrate new offices within. Hopkin's buildings make their architecture from their structure. The new elements of Bracken House include a reinforced concrete frame, with its exposed elements made with micaeous sand, and stone and bronze to match the existing facade.

The new building refelcts Schlumberger's first building but is distinct and separate from it. It is a two storey structure with a ferro cement slab supported by steel columns. The central roof is made from air-filled cushions. The walls of the two office wings are glazed.
