Making tracks

Article Abstract:

Transit systems, light rail, underground and heavy rail, offer an environmentally acceptable solution for urban transport but should be designed to reduce their own environmental impact. Light rail schemes are the most popular in the UK with 45 in various stages of planning. However, few have incorporated architectural advice on the effect of the infrasturcture on the cityscape. Manchester's Metrolink is operating but its poles and cables are intrusive. Examples of better planning and design are to be found in the Netherlands, Italy, France and Belgium.

Product review

Article Abstract:

Modern architecture in Europe is tending towards designing buildings as a single form, blurring the distinction between roof and walls. Metal and other cladding materials enable this style to be realised. Many differing cladding materials are available including traditional metals such as copper and lead, glass reinforced cement, superplastic aluminium, vitreous enamel, composite metal panels, glass and stone. Examples of the use of various materials are given together with information on coatings and weatherproofing.
