Targeting country funds

Article Abstract:

Closed-end country funds are an alternative to unit trusts for small investors who want to invest in Asia. Closed-end funds are often sold at discount to net asset value, and the manager does not have to add shares during market highs or redeem during market lows, as often happens with unit trusts. But closed-end funds may also sell at a premium, especially for countries such as Taiwan which restrict foreign investment. Both internal events and general market forces may cause large swings in selling price from discount to premium, and vice versa.

Timely reminder

Article Abstract:

Sr Minister Lee Kuan Yew commemorated the 50th anniversary of Singapore's fall to Japanese military rule on Feb 13, 1992. In his speech, he called on Japan to be open with the atrocities committed on Singaporeans during World War II. Contrasting Japan with Germany, he commented further that an open admission of war atrocities would convince the victims of Japan's change of attitude. He echoed the warning of other Northeast Asian countries against Japanese rearmament, which could reawaken nationalist sentiments in Japan.

Time for caution

Article Abstract:

Fund managers are trimming their investments in Hong Stock stocks, but panic selling and a crash is not likely. Some investors have taken their profits on the China Plays. Gains in the Hong Kong market during 1993-95 will probably not reach the 30%-40% levels of 1991-92. Investments from large foreign institutions will determine the direction of the market, and long-term prospects are favorable. Recommended stocks include Amoy Properties, Hysan, Jardines and Swire.
