A Patten reading list: some unsolicited suggestions for the next governor

Hong Kong governor-designate Christopher Patten was supposedly briefed by outgoing Lord Wilson on what should and should not be read prior to his taking office in July. Lord Wilson's list is supplemented with other suggestions including 'The Other Hong Kong Report,' 'Singular Listlessness,' 'Hong Kong Voices' and 'Democracy Shelved.' Films are also included in Patten's list for getting to know his domain. The documentary 'Sunless Days' and the satirical 'Hong Kong - No Problem!' are also suggested. Popular song tapes from Lo Tai-yau, Lowell Lo and Danny Summer round off the list.

Going green: big business wants to clean up the environment

Article Abstract:

Hong Kong's business sector is pushing for environmental regulations that will turn the territory into an environmentally conscious technological region. The group's move is designed to rouse the government into introducing environmental laws, which are long overdue because of political indecision and the mistrust between the large and small business sectors. A further problem is that Hong Kong's factories are not designed to accommodate imported anti-pollution devices because the establishments are usually small and situated in tall buildings.

Hong Kong's privatization of state-run Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK) has drawn sharp objections from China and the broadcasting department's own staff. Chinese officials charge that RTHK's privatization would deprive Hong Kong's post-1997 leadership of a government broadcasting arm. On the other hand, RTHK employees allege that the government is using the Chinese objection to compel them into accepting a sub-standard employment package.
