Calling John Hume

Article Abstract:

Northern Ireland's Social and Democratic Labor Party (SDLP) is led by John Hume, who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, as was unionist, David Trimble. Hume and Trimble do not have a good relationship, and Hume's deputy, Seamus Mallon was chosen to be deputy first minister to Trimble as first minister of Northern Ireland. Trimble has stated that Sinn Fein will not be allowed to enter the government, and Mallon has responded by seeking a compromise. Mallon cannot complain too much due to the risk of jeopardising the remainder of power sharing.

Waiting for a breakthrough

Article Abstract:

There are obstacles to the peace process in Northern Ireland, but there has also been progress over the issue of disarmament for the Irish Republican Army (IRA). Conflict has been avoided over Orange parades at Drumcree, and an agreement has been made on the first meeting of the Northern Ireland Assembly on Jul 15 1999. There appears to be acceptance among unionists as a whole for Sinn Fein's Martin McGuinness to be in government, and there has been a shift of opinion among republicans about disarmament.
