Ties that bind

Article Abstract:

A number of disputes could serve to heighten tensions between Malaysia and Singapore. These include the status of the Tanjong Pagar railway station in downtown Singapore, which is officially in Malaysian hands. The two countries would benefit significantly from cooperating at a time of economic turmoil, but seem unable to prevent their relations being clouded by disputes. Some observers believe that Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad is taking a negative stance on Singapore because of criticism within the ruling United Malays National Organization about his management of the economy.

Out of its depth

Article Abstract:

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) has so far been unable to tackle the region's economic crisis effectively. Asean leaders have been involved in extensive talks, but have not put any practical measures in place. Frequent talks are improving relations among Asean leaders, but they have not been able to find an easy solution to the region's economic difficulties. Some observers believe that the economic crisis will force significant restructuring at Asean.
