Article Abstract:

Car manufacturers are facing significant challenges as the 21st century approaches. In particular, supply is exceeding demand, and manufacturers are coming under pressure to reduce costs and capacity. It is likely that a number of merger and acquisition deals will be agreed. There will be significant changes at dealership level, with retail outlets no longer being restricted by franchise deals with manufacturers. Both car manufacturers and retailers will be affected by the shift towards using the internet to order new cars.

Both the chemical and food industries of Europe proved to be productive hunting grounds for potential mergers and acquisition investors during 1999, driving the market to its highest value ever. The food retail sector reported record mergers and acquisition deals, with the most noticeable being the $10.7 billion takeover of Asda by US-retail giant Walmart. Consolidation in the chemical and oil industry lead to several large deals being closed during 1999.
