Frustrated talent

Article Abstract:

An exhibition of the work of Robert Lutyens, son of the famous architect, Sir Edwin Lutyens, is being held in London, England. 'A Personal Tribute to Robert Lutyens 1901-1972' has been mounted at the Concord Gallery. Robert Lutyens was an interior designer, architect, painter and writer but the exhibition is a small one. His architectural work was overshadowed by that of his father, although Robert designed the London headquarters for Marks and Spencers and its Oxford Street store. He seems to have been a competent painter but his writings are the most interesting feature of his work.

The Landscape and Garden in Britain, 1930-2000 conference aimed to achieve an exchange of awareness between two interest-groups. It was jointly arranged by the Garden History Society and the Twentieth Century Society and was attended by around 200 delegates. The initial proceedings revolved around seeking a definition of Modernism in gardens and landscapes. Jan Birksted spoke of the need to understand the meaning and relationships in assessing landscapes.

Artistic aspirations in the post-war public realm

Article Abstract:

The use of art in buildings has been gaining momentum since the 1980s although art has been used in a variety of ways to enhance public architecture for over 40 years. Sculpture and murals are the most popular forms of art sometimes being acknowledged as more interesting than the buildings which house them. More recently art in public places has been under close scrutiny from the public, who often have unfavourable opinions about works of public art.
